At a practical level, a different type of shift is already becoming apparent.
According to data compiled by Littler, an employment law and labour practice, the number of people in Ireland working beyond 66 rose 40% between 2020 and the end of 2025, from 77,300 to 108.300.
“A genuine preference to remain in work is likely to be more of a constant over time” Niall Pelly, partner at Littler Dublin says.
“The fact that there has been such a significant rise during this period strongly suggests that cost-of-living pressures are the principal driver.”
“Pensioners on a fixed income are more exposed to inflationary pressures than workers who may be able to benefit from pay increases through continued employment.”
